Answers.Com Articles and a Request

I wanted to share my most recent Answers.com articles with all of my readers. Please take a moment to click on them, and if you have time to read them and give feedback, that would be even better!

Using Sugar Substitutes on a Low-Carb Diet: Pros and Cons

Thai Ginger Scallops with "Rice"

How Does Alcohol Fit Into a Low-Carb Diet?

Tips for Eating Low Carb on a Budget

As I mentioned previously, my contract with Answers.com states that I'm required to write 10 articles a month for the next year. So 15 articles down, 105 left to go :)

This is what I'd love to get from any of you (via Facebook, Twitter, blog post comments, or using my website Contact page):

  • Ideas for future articles  (Fact-based rather than opinion, easy-to-understand pieces for new as well as experienced low-carbers)
  • Original low-carb recipes (Nutritional information not required -- I can do the analysis)
  • Feedback on the articles

If you're able to help me by providing any of the above, I'd greatly appreciate it!  Thank you all again so much for continuing to share my website and message with others. I'm not a natural at self-promotion but recognize that it's necessary to some extent. Since I'll be going into private practice at the end of the year, I'm doing my best to figure out how to do it in a way I'll be comfortable with.

How about something on sugar alcohols - the variable absorption of different types, erythritol vs maltitol etc.

Along the lines of http://www.mendosa.com/netcarbs.htm

Also the Skaldeman Index / ratio or Ketogenic ratio that some of us find helpful - more fat than (carbs plus protein)

another idea - The fate of excess protein, or why high protein diets aren't low carb in reality.

Thanks very much for the ideas, Phil! I actually did address the effects of the different types of sugar alcohols on blood sugar in the article about sugar substitutes but could go into greater detail in a future article.

I have , probably, too many ideas, and several recipes, so I hope to share it on your blog from time to time. The first idea - the stigma of measuring sugar as a diabetics-only activity should be removed. When I talk to people about some of their health problem as BS-related, many take it as an offence - they are not despised diabetics! D2 are presumably thous who ate themselves into such condition, according to the public opinion. Well, many if not most who have an unstable bs, would never became diabetics, but would suffer from the blood glucose instability!

Idea #2 - exploring ways to implement LC for many health conditions, especially everyday occurrences like choice of drinks and foods during a flue or infection, during PMS, stress.... There are multiple evidence about the connection between BS and having a flu or infection. I guess, it is the multiple posts opportunity, because way too many health problems are influenced by BS levels.

Those are fabulous ideas, Galina! Thank you so much.

I would love to see any of your low-carb recipes. It would probably work best if you use my Contact page to send me a message privately. Really appreciate your support and feedback :)

Plateau breaking tips, although I think Jimmy Moore pretty much nailed it:

1. Consuming too much protein.
2. Using urine ketone testing sticks to measure ketosis.
3. Not eating enough dietary fat.
4. Eating too often/too much food.
5. Failing to stabilize blood sugar levels.

How to use the "Eat to Your Meter System" if you're eating low carb in response to diabetes.

Fast and dirty recipe idea. Cauliflower faux mashed potatoes are a popular low carb dish. I think adding summer squash to mashed cauliflower gives it a more mashed potato texture and improves the taste too.

Hi Tim,

Love the ETYM idea. Yes, cauli-mash is another great low-carb staple, but I've never thought about adding summer squash. Sounds delicious! Thanks so much for sharing.

The difference between ketosis diabetic ketoacidos. Many T1's fear a low carb diet because they confuse these two conditions.

The benefits of ketosis for endurance athletes as pointed out by Dr.'s Phinney and Volk

There seems to be a situation where the diabetic is getting good advice from research and listening to his body, but has a doctor that is hostile to anything but his own training. Coping strategies?

Hi Hilary,

I'm glad to hear you feel great and have lost some weight. Hunger levels vary from day to day. Make sure you're eating enough calories, fat, and protein. It's best to eat to satiety but not to fullness. Some days I'm hungrier and eat a lot more than others, yet I stay slim and my weight fluctuates by only a couple of pounds. I eat some type of nonstarchy vegetable at every meal in addition to a high-fat (65-70%) diet. Best of luck to you!

How about something really driving the point home that eating gluten-free does not mean you have to go buy all the gluten-free alternative products (GF bread, GF wraps, GF torillas, etc.). Just eat whole foods that don't contain gluten!
