Low-Carb Article for ADA's Diabetes Spectrum now available

I wanted to let any interested readers know that my article for the ADA’s Diabetes Spectrum is now viewable by all on their website. Two points to keep in mind:

  1. This article was heavily edited by the ADA, and I was asked to modify some of my recommendations and add qualifiers to certain statements. I’m also not thrilled with some of the changes they made in terms of verbiage and sentence structure (there are definitely a few awkward phrases), but that’s a minor concern.

  2. I wrote the article over a year ago and realize there are other studies I could have cited as references. This was my first professional article, and I was pretty green in terms of research.

While I did have to make some concessions, I’m still very encouraged that the Spectrum editors asked me to write an article favorable to carbohydrate restriction. Slowly but surely, we are making progress!

I can’t publish the article here because the ADA owns it, but you can access it through this link:

Good analysis and conclusion, Franziska. It's tough to operate in "their world" but we are definitely taking it back, and you are in the vanguard. Congratulations!

You did well making the case for a carb-limited diet to control post meal blood glucose for persons with diabetes. I know that you had to maintain a professional and diplomatic tone when you said, "Although a low-carbohydrate diet may not be the best method for
everyone, for some, it may be the key to finally achieving recommended blood glucose targets."

As a person with Type 1 diabetes, I cannot maintain any semblance of postprandial blood glucose control if I consume more than 20-30 grams of carbs per meal. I know because for decades, I tried. And failed!

Thank-you for bringing some legitimacy to my n=1 low carb diet world.

Thanks so much, Terry! Really enjoy hearing from all of my readers with diabetes, types 1 and 2. You're correct that the ADA made sure the article was very balanced; I had to take out several sentences I really liked (maybe I'll publish them here one day). My next article for the IDF's Diabetes Voice on low-carb for T1 is an opinion piece, which I think you'll like better. I certainly do :)

Thank you, Nan! I'm hoping the CDE dietitians, nurse practitioners, and doctors who read the Spectrum will consider making similar recommendations to their patients.
